VVA 542 To Receive Its Own UH-1 Flyable Huey

VVA 542 has received word that the paper work has been forwarded to receive from the Pa. Army National Guard a flyable UH-1 Huey that was due to be mothballed. The chapter has several members who are still employed as mechanics with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard at Fort Indiantown Gap and are also licensed A&P mechanics, and have volunteered to work on our aircraft. Also the chapter has several former UH-1 Instructor Pilots all with several thousand hours in the Huey. Included in those that have volunteered to fly our aircraft are BG (Ret) Cecil Hengeveld, CW4 (Ret) Gerry Burton, CW5 (Ret) Gerry Hess, CW5 (Ret) Don Beatty, CW5(Ret) John Travers, and CW4 (Ret) John Calaman.

Thanks to Harrisburg Jet Center we will have hanger space at Capitol City Airport, and plan to have a ceremony when the aircraft is turned over to the chapter. We plan to make the aircraft available to other veteran organizations for events and also to provide it to the city of Harrisburg and surrounding communities for civic events. Delivery is hopefully to happen within the year. Stay tuned for more information.

May 28th VVA 542 in Annville Parade

On May 28th VVA 542 will participate in the largest Memorial Day parade in Pennsylvania, the Annville Parade. Last year VVA 542 with the help of American Airlines and the Dustoff Association provided the Grand Marshalls for the parade. They were the Dustoff crewmen of the year who were members of the 571st Dustoff Unit just back from the Iraq War. Also riding as Grand Marshalls were Col (Ret) Doug Moore Vietnam Dustoff Pilot and holder of the Distingushed Service Cross, and Kevin Donoghue Vietnam medic from the 57th Med Det. This year VVA 542 will provide a flatbed truck with many of our members on board and gifts for the crowd.

September Harrisburg Chapter 542
to Host State VVA Meeting

In September VVA chapter 542 will host the Pennsylvania VVA State Council meeting. Plans are in the works to coordinate with the city of Harrisburg to park a Vietnam era UH-1 helicopter in front of the Hilton Hotel in Downtown Harrisburg. Since the meeting coincides with POW/MIA week we also plan a reading of the names of Pennsylvania service men listed as Missing In Action. There are also plans for a public seminar by former Vietnam Prisoners of War. More details will be coming in the next few months.

On Tuesday May 3rd at 12:00 noon at the Vietnam Memorial WALL there will be a ceremony where the Vietnam Vterans of America Chapter 542 will place the Combat Aeromedic Badge at the base of the panels containing the names of the Fallen Dustoff crewmembers of the Vietnam War.

The badge is based on a design rendered by Billy Cunningham a medic who served with the 57th Med Det Republic of Vietnam. The badges will be contained in jewelry cases and after the ceremony forwarded to those relatives of the men on the Wall who requested them.

This ceremony will highlight the new Bills that have been placed in both the House and Senate calling for the Army to officially recognize the service of Dustoff both past and present.

Present at the ceremony to help place the badges will be Congressional Medal Of Honor recepitiant Mike Novosel, former Vietnam Prisioner of War for over 7 years US Navy Cpt. ( Ret) Ed Davis, double amputee infantry solider Fred Castleberry, and many other Vietnam veterans including Congressman Joesph Pitts of Pennsylvaniaa former B52 crewmember during the Vietnam War, and co sponser of the new Bill in the House.

With the advent of the new "Close Combat Badge" the Vietnam Veterans of America feel time has come to bring this matter to public attention. We expect a media presence and are ready to state our case to the public. To all who can attend we welcome you to join us. To those currently serving with Dustoff we especially would love to have you attend as the new bills in Congress affect you as well.
